The bay of Maputo provides visitors with an experience that is so different from a normal holiday's logistics. There are a few different ways to get to Nhoxani, each with its own appeal:
Flying to Maputo is certainly the fastest. The International airport is reasonably efficient. No VISAs are required for SA passport holders. There are four flights per day from JHB to Maputo and return, direct daily flights to/from Durban and twice a week flights to/from Cape Town. In addition there are direct International flights from Europe twice a week.
From Maputo to Nhoxani by charter helicopter is only a 20 minute flight. Alternatively, one can transfer by taxi to Maputo Marina (20 minutes), followed by a boat transfer (one hour) right up to one’s house. Ideally one should own your own boat or a share in one, store it at Maputo Marina, have it launched for you before you arrive and be independent.
The driving option is also popular: the drive from JHB or DBN to Maputo is easy on tar roads, much of it highway, taking approximately 6 hours. One passes through the border posts for immigration, customs and temporary vehicle/boat import documentation and insurance. This is usually a half an hour stop. Once arriving at Maputo, one can safely park and leave your vehicle at the Maputo Mariner at a small cost. Garages are close by for fuel requirements. If you wish to drive all the way to Santa Maria, an adventure through the Elephant Reserve will take you on sand roads, which are slow, and a detour around the bay of Maputo, which will add another 4 hours onto your journey. It is tough going in the heavy sand, but nevertheless a beautiful drive.
Supplies are plentiful in Maputo, with GAME, SHOPRITE, WOOLWORTHS and many local high quality supermarkets available for every need. Medical facilities are also available with private clinics offering excellent support. The village of Santa Maria, only 4 kms from Nhoxani, offers logistical support for fuel and gas cylinder recharges. A convenience store is also available for a variety of dry goods, some fresh produce and most beverages. Nhoxani uses well water and obtains electricity off the national grid via its own transformer.
